These beautiful bud-like mineral formations are quite rare, which only adds to their mysterious quality.

How Does Desert Rose Gypsum Form?

The reason that Desert Roses are considered rare is that their formation process requires particular conditions to occur. As the water slowly evaporates out of a salt basin, particularly one that is shallow, you are sometimes left with forms of dissolved Baryte or, for our purposes, Gypsum.
